Alexendre-Gustave Eiffel designed the Eiffel Tower. He was a French civil engineer, specializing in metal
structures. Before the Eiffel Tower, he created the
Garabit viaduct and the internal frame for the
Statue of Liberty.
The French government held a contest for the best monument to be used as a display in the
1899 World's Fair where more than 700 monument designs were entered, but
the Eiffel Tower won the contest.
The Eiffel Tower was completed by 300 steelworkers in two years.
With 9441 tons of weight and 1069 feet high, the Eiffel Tower is still the tallest
structure in Paris.
