The prehistoric monument is located in the Southwest part of England.
This monument of stones is believed to have been built starting in 3000 B.C.
The tallest stone, measures about 23 feet high, the lower stones in the sarsen ring are
21 feet high.
They weigh up to 40 tons.
No one is really sure who built Stonehenge or why it was built.
Some theories were that it was constructed by the
Druids
or even the Romans, but those
theories were disproved in the 20th century, when it was shown that construction began
over 2,000 years before
Celts, and later Romans had even arrived in the area.
Most people believe that
Neolithic people of the British Isles started
building the Stonehenge monument around 5,000 years ago.
The Stonehenge was constructed as a holy place for religious rituals and ceremonies.
Many of the original stones have fallen or been removed by previous generations for home
construction or road repair, the stones we see today represent
Stonehenge in ruins.
