The Colossus of Rhodes



The Colossus of Rhodes was built on a pedestal 50 feet high. All in all, Colossus was about 160 feet tall. It was commissioned by Chares of Lindos. It was believed to be started after 304 B.C. and took 12 years to finish. The big Structure was a framework made of iron, the skin of bronze, and the pedestal was made of white marble. Rhode is an island near Asia Minor and an ancient trading center that was repeatedly conquered. It was conquered by Mausolus of Halicarnassus. He was the king of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus fame in 357 B.C, then by the Persians, and then by Alexander the Great in 332. The statue was thought to have been hit down by an eartquake.
