Machu Picchu is the lost Inca city discovered by
Hiram Bingham
. He was appointed as delegate to the
First Pan American Scientific Congress at Santiago, Chile.
Since the ruins had no name, according to the name of the mountain, Bingham and others started to call it
Machu Picchu. When the Spaniards conquered Incas, the Spaniards didn't find Machu Picchu.
The Spaniards didn't know about the existence of Machu Picchu, nobody new anything about it.
Machu Picchu that means "Old Peak" is located in the Andes Mountains in modern Peru.
It was built between 1460 and 1470 AD. The city has an altitude of 8,000 feet, and is high above the
Urubamba River Canyon.
Machu Picchu is formed by approximately 200 buildings including temples, public buildings, and
residences.
There is a lot of speculations about what was Machu Picchu?
There are three teories about that.
1. It was the royal retreat.
2. Religious place.
3. Ancient fortress.
That is why Machu Picchu still a mysterious place.
