Petra, Jordan



Petra is a city made of rock that contains about 800 magnificient rock structures including a mausoleum, tunnels, water chambers, and a amphitheater that held 4,000 people. Also, it has a palace, and a royal treasury the "Khazneh el- Farun", which is the most popular of all the buildings. This city was carved out of rocks and inhabited by the Nabataeans more than 500 years before Christ's birth. This city was later under domination of the Crusaders which ended with the Muslim conquest. Petra was completely abandoned and rediscovered only in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. Petras' stone structures have a heigh of 138 foot tall temple carved with classical facades into rose colored rock. Petra seted on the edge of the Arabian Desert, was the capital of the Nabataenan kingdom of King Aretas IV (9 B.C to A.D. 4000).
