The New Seven Wonders of the World




Taj Mahal, India



The Taj Mahal that means "Crown Palace" was built by a Muslim, Emperor Shah Jahan, he was known as Prince Khurram before ascending to the throne in 1628. This tumb was built in the memory of his dear wife and queen Mumtaz Mahal at Agra, India. The Taj Mahal was constructed over a period of 22 years, employing 20,000 workers, and it was completed in 1648. At cost of 32 million Rupees, the Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. This beautiful monument seems to glow in the light of the full moon. It stands on a raised, square platform 186 x 186 feet with its four corners truncated forming on unequal octagon. Its central dome is 58 feet in diameter and rises to a height of 213 feet. The entire monument inside and outside is decorated with flowers and calligraphy using precious gems such as agate and jasper. Shah Jahan died in 1666 C.E., where his grave was added it later at the lower chamber where his wife's grave rests.
