Christ Redeemer, Brazil

The Christ Redeemer is located in Rio de Janeiro on the top of the Corcovado Mountain. The statue is 72 years old and has gone under several extensive renovations. One of those renovations included an elevator that was added in 2002. The statue was first conceived in 1921 when a campaign to collect funds from the Catholic Church was held. When the country was to celebrate 100 years of independence, it was when the idea to create the statue came. The Christ Redeemer was sculpted in France by a sculptor Paul Landowski, but the person who designed the statue was Carlos Oswaldo. The view from the top of the statue is the best view of Rio de Janeiro.
