The lighthouse of Alexandria was situaded on the small offshore
island of Pharos in Egypt.
Pharos was not a true island, it was connected to the mainland by a channel, called the Heptastadion.
In this way, Alexandria had two harbors, one on either side of the channel.
This huge building had three parts, one built on top of another.
The first part was square and 183.4 feet high. The second part was octagonal in shape and 90 feet high.
The third part was 24 feet high cylinder, including the base, the total height of the Lighthouse
was 384 feet, which would be a 40 story building in modern times.
The Lighthouse stood for centuries, but earthquakes eventually brought down the famed structure.
